"Ce n'est pas L'intestin," meaning "This is not an Intestine" in French, draws inspiration from René Magritte's "ce n'est pas un serie," where everyday objects are depicted, highlighting that they are mere representations rather than the objects themselves. This triptych serves as a visual reminder of the three distinct brains within the human body, challenging the notion that we solely rely on our traditional understanding of the brain and often overlook the collective influence of these "brains" on our reactions to the environment.
The drawing specifically focuses on the Enteric Brain, residing within the gut, comprising 100 million neurons. This Enteric Brain controls self-preservation, mobilization, and responds to challenges, opposition, and danger. It plays a pivotal role in determining our core sense of self. Through the depiction of the Enteric Brain, the artwork invokes expressions like "It takes guts" and "My gut tells me."
"Ce n'est pas L'intestin" encourages contemplation of the intricate connections between our various "brains" and their impact on our experiences and decision-making. By referencing Magritte's concept, it prompts viewers to question the narrow perspective often associated with the human brain and to recognize the profound influence of our collective "brains" on our perception, actions, and overall well-being.
