"La Premier Point d'effacement," or "The First Point of Erasure," depicts a photograph from a magazine that showcases stylized images of African people. In this drawing, five figures are seen in what appears to be an informal settlement. Ilunga highlights how representation shapes our understanding of reality, specifically in the portrayal of refugees or 'alien invaders'. Often, they are depicted in positions of need, raising concerns about their living conditions, healthcare, education, and safety. This raises the questions; Why are foreign nationals frequently associated with impoverished living conditions and portrayed as threats to the environments they attempt to flee to? Why do we continue to perpetuate these outdated ideas around foreign nationals? Ilunga's artwork challenges these preconceptions and seeks to bring awareness to the issue.
