"Ndaya as Lioness" captures the vivid imagery from a recurring dream that has accompanied Ilunga since their primary school days—a dream in which they find themselves within their family home, encircled by a majestic pride of lions. Despite delving into deep analysis, Ilunga remains uncertain about the true nature of the lions roaming through their parents' house—whether they represent their own family in an alternate reality or if Ilunga themselves is an integral part of the lion pride.
Nonetheless, within this artwork, Ilunga recalls a powerful saying that resonates with them: "You die once when you're a lion, but die a thousand times as a sheep." The visualization of Ndaya as a lioness encapsulates the strength and fearlessness associated with lions, embodying the essence of living boldly and authentically. It serves as a contemplative exploration of the notion that embracing our inner lion—our unique and courageous self—is essential to truly living, while conforming to societal expectations can lead to a metaphorical death of the spirit.
