Charcoal and shoe polish labels on Fabriano paper
This self-portrait depicts the artist transformed into the spiritual being 'Ndayene,' adorned with beaded embellishments and a golden headpiece that features peace sign beads spanning horizontally across her forehead and through the middle of her hair. The figure wears a gold necklace that drapes over her bare breasts, with four braids tied in knots on her head and two braids with beaded adornments falling along the sides of her ears. Her shadow is cast in gold on the black and red Kiwi shoe polish labels, which repeat the phrase "Parade Gloss" in the background.
This piece utilizes iconography from consumable products, positioning the black female body in relation to Kiwi shoe polish. The shoe polish logo serves as a subliminal message, encouraging black women to "parade" their black skin and embrace its glossy and shiny qualities.
