This drawing by Ilunga is based on a photograph taken at her mother's exhibition at the Bag Factory in 2001. The image portrays a family of refugees, consisting of two parents and 11 children from various African countries, including Burundi, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The figures' hollowed-out eyes convey the sense of displacement and lack of agency experienced by refugees. Despite their difficult circumstances, the family is portrayed as a united group, emphasizing the importance of community and human connection. Ilunga's mother is depicted among the figures, partly obscured by others.
The use of the term "war pigs" acknowledges the challenges and adversity faced by refugees, while also celebrating their resilience and determination to survive. The artwork invites the viewer to reflect on the experiences of refugees and to recognize their humanity and strength in the face of difficult circumstances.
