Collection: EAU Series

Ilunga's inspiration for her artwork comes from the metaphorical connection between water and the subconscious state of mind. She sees water as a life-giving substance that is essential to our survival, but also uncertain and capable of distorting objects that are immersed in it, much like our minds can distort our thoughts and emotions. By using abstract renditions of water and incorporating figures that blend into the vibrant blues and subtle shades of abstract mark making, Ilunga aims to spark conversation about the conservation of our planet and the need for a nurturing and holistic restructuring of society.

Ilunga's process involves emphasizing the relationship between the "self" and the "environment" by rendering figures as much smaller or blending/bleeding into the water environment. This is meant to comment on how we affect our environment and vice versa. She believes that when we are lost in our thoughts, the only thing that can defeat us is ourselves, and we often manifest our fears and desires into our dreams and waking reality.

Through her artwork, Ilunga hopes to shed light on the shared feeling of disconnection that many people experience as they navigate through adulthood, and the overwhelming sense of change, lack of control, and need for re-evaluation that accompanies it. Ultimately, she wants to inspire viewers to reflect on their own relationship with the environment and to approach it with greater awareness, empathy, and care.
